We all know that with the activities we participate in, there is a risk of head injuries.
What science is telling us now, is that many of these head injuries can lead to long term issues when they are not properly managed.
From this, ACC (NZ Accident Compensation Corporation) has developed some guidelines to help people identify and manage when head injuries are causing a concussion.
The idea behind these guidelines is not to stop the fun but to provide a framework that will help prevent poor outcomes in the future. This includes when a participant should be removed from the activity, when serious medical support is needed and the staged process to return to activity.
Check out these guidelines as many sporting codes are beginning to adopt these as minimum standards on how to manage any head injuries that occur during activities.
